A final reality about doing anything under uncertainty: adapting and change is required. It would be impossible to intuit and implement a perfect product or idea without trial and error so this is no cause for mourning. Much like the scientific method, pivoting helps you stay focused on your vision but enables a shift in strategy.

 

Adopted from the game of basketball, pivoting allows the player to change direction but only while the pivot foot stays planted.  When you pivot without keeping a foot grounded in what you know and what’s working, you lose the momentum and thread of what you have learned so far.  Pivots are thoughtful attempts in a new direction and can range from small tweaks to massive about-face decisions. When rooted in the learning that came from experiments in directions that didn’t work, pivots bring you closer to a deeper sense of your vision and are powerful enough to bring you into position for leaps as well.
